The UK Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State and Minister for the Education System has made clear her openness to the use of ChatGPT in the education system, responding that the Department of Education is reviewing the potentially transformative "crisis" that large-scale language modeling technology tools pose to the education system, but also believes that education technology can improve the education system as a whole. In contrast, the UK's top universities appear to be cautious but divided on how they approach ChatGPT, with almost a third of the Russell Group universities directly declaring a ban on the use of generative AI tools in essay writing and daily academic assessment, and many more universities saying they are reviewing their assessments to bring the use of AI tools into the regulatory system.

As of today, the U.S. Department of Education has not issued a policy document regarding specific regulation of generative AI tools. However, for reasons such as the inability to ensure student content originality and test cheating, public school district education departments across the U.S. have announced bans on the use of ChatGPT in district LANs and campus public devices. in contrast, the U.S. higher education system appears to have adopted a different response strategy. Rather than banning the tool altogether, the higher education system is providing advice to faculty and staff and allowing faculty to decide how to use ChatGPT in the classroom.
